Will an emotional crisis affect my divorce?

On Behalf of The Law Office of Amy K. Butler, Esquire, PLLC | Oct 3, 2024 | Divorce

There isn’t an easy way to deal with a divorce, and anyone going through it will experience some anxiety. However, facing an emotional crisis can indeed impact the divorce process in several ways:

  • Custody decisions: Mental health issues can tip the scale in favor of the spouse, who seems more capable of handling the children, especially if they are minors.
  • Support and alimony: Someone going through an emotional crisis may not be able to hold a job, which could affect any means of support or alimony.
  • Legal representation: If the court determines that either spouse cannot make decisions during the proceedings, they may appoint a guardian ad litem to represent them. However, such appointments are rare.

Mental health challenges can make divorce feel even more complicated. It is critical to seek support from mental health professionals and legal advisors to continue and follow through with the process.

How can I deal with divorce while trying to manage my mental health?

There is no playbook to manage mental health, especially since such a stressful situation triggers it. However, several ways exist to alleviate the symptoms and make it more manageable so you can continue the proceedings. They are:

  • Take on a mental health coach to help you with mindfulness and meditation practices
  • Build up a support system that will help you feel confident and strong
  • Get into the habit of moving your body, like exercising or taking on an outdoor sport
  • Focus on keeping your body healthy by eating and sleeping well
  • Express yourself through creative work
  • Talk to someone

Although these strategies will help you deal with your mental health, only a reliable legal representative can help you finish the divorce process quickly. A fresh start may be the best way to improve your mental health.
